چکیده

OBJECTIVE The main object of this study was to use a geometric morphometric approach to quantify the left-right symmetry of talus bones. METHODS Analysis was carried out using CT scan images of 11 pairs of intact tali. Two important geometric parameters, volume and surface area, were quantified for left and right talus bones. The geometric shape variations between the right and left talus bones were also measured using deviation analysis. Furthermore, location of asymmetry in the geometric shapes were identified. RESULTS Numerical results showed that talus bones are bilaterally symmetrical in nature, and the difference between the surface area of the left and right talus bones was less than 7.5%. Similarly, the difference in the volume of both bones was less than 7.5%. Results of the three-dimensional (3D) deviation analyses demonstrated the mean deviation between left and right talus bones were in the range of -0.74 mm to 0.62 mm. It was observed that in eight of 11 subjects, the deviation in symmetry occurred in regions that are clinically less important during talus surgery. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that left and right talus bones of intact human ankle joints show a strong degree of symmetry. The results of this study may have significance with respect to talus surgery, and in investigating traumatic talus injury where the geometric shape of the contralateral talus can be used as control. Isolated Tuberculosis of the Talus Bone

Case: Isolated talus osteomyelitis caused by Koch's bacillus (BK) is extremely rare. In this paper we report an isolated talus bone tuberculosis in a 52 year-old man who presented a 2-month history of swelling, pain and functional disability of his right ankle. Surgical bone curetting and histological examination showed granuloma with central caseating necrosis. Acid fast stain and PCR examin...

Extensive Osteochondroma of Talus Presenting as Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome: Report of a case and Literature Review

Osteochondroma or exostosis is the most common benign bone tumor, and occurring frequently in the proximal humerus, tibia, and distal femur. It rarely affects talus. Osteochondroma of talus is a very rare etiology of tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS). We report a rare case of extensive osteochondroma of the talus in a 60 year old female presenting with multiple swellings around the ankle and sympt...

Dysplasia Epiphysealis Hemimelica (Trevor Syndrome) of Talus in a 21-Year Old Woman; Case Report

Dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica is a rare nonhereditary epiphyseal disease that mimics synovial chondromatosis and osteochondroma of the joints. The disease mainly involves long bones of the lower extremities and tarsal bones. Herein we report 21-year old woman who presented with pain and limited range of ankle motion, who underwent surgical excision of talus exostosis after preoperative imag...

Morphometric Analysis of the Human Tali

Due to the very unique disposition of the articular surfaces associated with the talus, the bone and its constituent components (body and the head) are oriented in specialised spatial orientation. Thus, the force subjected to the talus in load bearing not only dictates the resultant shapes and dimensions of the articular surfaces acquired by the bone, stress on the talus also probably decides t...

Trabecular angle of the human talus is associated with the level of cartilage degeneration.

The architecture of bone trabeculae is based on the direction of stresses applied to the bone. The human talar dome receives compressive forces from the tibia and, to a much lesser extent, the fibula when standing, walking, and running, and transmits the force downward to the calcaneus through the talar body and anterior to the navicular via the talar head. As a result, the body of the talus ha...
